His remit includes identifying and delivering opportunities for major events to take place in London before and after the London 2012 Olympics.
Edmondson has 18 years of experience in operations and project management, and was a member of the London 2012 winning bid team.
He has also advised on major bids and legacy planning for events including the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games during his previous role at UK sports consultancy PMP.
"It's a great time to be leading the Events for London team," said Edmondson. "The world's eyes are on London, and the city has the talent and creativity to establish itself as the home of exciting, inspiring and sustainable major events that will drive a positive change for visitors, businesses and residents."
