The deal will see the carbon emissions calculator linked to all 21 hotels in the Barcelo hotel portfolio, which comprises more than 2,800 bedrooms and 217 conference and meeting spaces.

Carepar (Carbon Emissions Per Room Available) gives meeting planners a standard method of calculating the carbon cost of the venue usage for an individual stay or event. Over time, as hotels resubmit their variable data, their indices are recalculated, and improvements in environmental impact logged.

Charles Prew, chief executive of Barcelo UK, said: "We are seeing an increase in the number of requests for information on our corporate social responsibility and environmental policies.

"Carepar will help us respond to the needs of travel managers, who are under pressure to measure the impact their business travellers are having on the environment. Using it means all the data is collated together in one document allowing quick analysis to be done and improvements to be made where necessary.

"This is the start of an evolving process as the group proactively tries to reduce its Carbon Emissions."
