Star Alliance trials online booking for conference groups

Airline network Star Alliance is trialling online booking this year to enhance its growing portfolio of services for meetings and conventions groups.

The network, which has 26 participating airlines including UK carrier BMI, is trialling the online booking tool for the XVIII International Aids Conference in Vienna in July.

BMI key account manager Brad Flynn says that the service will enable delegates attending the conference to get the Star Alliance discount automatically applied to their booking regardless of which Star Alliance carrier they fly with.

"Previously, delegates would have had to phone the call centre of the airline they wanted to fly with and give them the code so the discount could be applied manually," he said.

He added that following the trial, Star Alliance hopes to offer the online booking tool to all clients using its Conventions Plus product, targeted at events with a minimum of 500 international delegates from at least three countries and two continents.

Star Alliance also launched a new Meetings Plus product, aimed a smaller meetings and conference groups, at the end of last year.

The product offers discounts to meetings of at least 50 delegates, from at least three countries, not including the meeting destination.
