Visit Britain's new head of business visits and events, Simon Mills, announced at the Confex show this morning that the industy planned to hold a lobbying event for MPs at the House of Commons on 18 October.
"The event will be driven by BVEP and we aim to lobby MPs that have a lot of events in their constituencies to raise awareness about the economic benefits that events bring," said Mills. "MPs understand large scale events like music festivals but they don't tend to understand the value of large scale events, so one of the aims of this lobbying event is to unsure they understand that value."
International Confex group portfolio director Duncan Reid said the number of MPs targeted to attend the event could not be determined until after the next election.
"We want to get as many MPS involved as possible but we will be targeting the key players in the sector," said Reid. "The shadow tourism minister Tobias Ellwood has said he will back the event if he is becomes tourism minister."
All of the large industry associations, including MPI, ICCA, SITE and Eventia, support the lobbying event, he said.
