ITM is inviting candidates to submit proposals for the new role through a formal request for proposal process.
The head of sustainability's remit will be to support the roll-out of ITM's sustainability project Icarus across Europe.
ITM is managing new association NBTA Europe and the introduction of Icarus to Europe is part of its new remit.
The new recruit will support Icarus chairman Mark Avery in leading the advisory group and supplier committee to widen the project in Europe, and provide more in-depth coverage of the social and financial elements of CSR rather than the existing focus on the environment.
The head of sustainability will revise the supplier award and accreditation process to align it with a more European, and potentially global, project roll-out.
Avery said ITM was issuing a formal RFP to ensure the recruitment process was impartial and encourage potential contractors it may not yet have considered.
"This is a key role for Icarus, ITM and NBTA Europe," he said. "The right person will allow Icarus to flourish and reap the rewards of having led the existing team to that point."
Candidates should register their interest with ITM chief executive Paul Tilstone (firstname.lastname@example.org) and the response deadline for the RFP is 12 February.
