Visit Britain's International Passenger Survey also found that business visitor numbers were down 18% in July to September this year compared to the same period last year.

Visit Britain spokesman Mark Di-Toro said the decline in business visitors to Britain reflected the recession.

"Massive companies like Lehman Brothers, that used to generate a lot of business visits, don't exist any more and firms are not sending staff on overseas flights as much as they used to," he said.
