Intercontinental Edinburgh £250m hotel plan rejected

Intercontinental Hotel Group's plan to expand into Scotland with a £250m property in Edinburgh has been blocked by the Scottish Parliament.

The five-star hotel, business and leisure complex, in the Haymarket area of the city, was set to include a dedicated conference floor on one of its 17 storeys, plus 200 rooms, 31,800sqm of office space and a number of shops and restaurants.

But Scottish Ministers have rejected the proposals because of their potential impact on the Edinburgh skyline.

Planning advisers said in a report: "The five-star hotel building would rise above the height of the surrounding buildings and have an impact on key views of St Mary's Cathedral spire and Castle Rock."

As well as providing a major boost to the city's C&I offer, the hotel was projected to create 2,000 jobs and generate almost £9m of annual visitor spend.
