Eurostar optimistic about business travel budgets

Eurostar is cautiously optimistic about corporate sector bookings after seeing a number of major clients ease restrictions on business travel.

The rail operator hinted at signs of improvement in the corporate revenues as it unveiled its financial results for the third quarter of 2009, which showed an overall increase in passenger numbers from 2.4 million in July to September 2008 to 2.6 million in the same period of 2009.

Eurostar chief executive Richard Brown said: "In recent weeks, a number of our major corporate clients have eased their business travel restrictions. Although it is early days, this may be a sign of an upturn."

A spokesman for the company added that these comments were based on anecdotal evidence rather than any specific figures, and he emphasised that the overall passenger increase was due to an improvement in leisure rather than business travel.

"We are fully aware that business is very tough but there are signs of an upturn. It is not reflected in our figures yet because it's more to do with changes in habits, but let's hope it's the start of something better," said the spokesman.
