Competition for pharmaceutical business heating up, says World Events

World Events will retain its focus on pharmaceutical business despite growing competition from agencies targeting the so-called recession-resilient sector.

World Events sales and marketing director Mark Saxby said pharmaceutical clients were being targeted for business by an increased number of agencies during the recession.

"Our clients are saying that they are receiving a large number of calls from other agencies coming into the pharmaceutical sector," said Saxby.

Saxby was confident that the increased competition would not reduce World Events' market share of the sector.

"The majority of large and medium pharmaceutical companies tend to have contracts in place that last for two to three years and we have just signed a five-year contract," said Saxby.

"It's a highly regulated industry and agencies increasingly need the relevant skills, understanding and knowledge, which World Events has, and we have our heritage of working in the sector and the ability to deliver events globally."

World Events plans to retain its focus on the sector and about a year ago it forecasted that 70% of its clients would be pharmaceutical companies within three years.

World Events held its annual company conference at Escrick Park in York recently, see C&IT's photo gallery of the outdoor festival style event here.
