Jakarta properties Ritz-Carlton and JW Marriott had "extensive security procedures" in place at the time of last week's terror attack, the hotel groups say.

An updated statement from the properties said: "At the time of the incident, extensive security procedures were in place at the Ritz-Carlton and the JW Marriott."

Marriott International chairman Bill Marriott said in his blog: "In recognition of the unfortunate realities in which we live, we have had rigorous security procedures in place at these hotels (JW Marriott and Ritz-Carlton in Jakarta) and others around the world. I want to personally assure you that the safety and security of our guests and associates has been, and always will be, one of our highest priorities."

"It is a sad truth in today's world that, if someone is willing to sacrifice his or her own life in an attack, there are no guarantees of safety. Nonetheless, we remain committed to do our best to implement tough and effective security procedures working with our associates, outside security experts and the authorities," he said in his blog.
