Excel London is one step closer to building a new hotel offering up to 280 rooms after securing outline planning permission.

The proposal was submitted by property firm Jones Lang LaSalle on behalf of the East London venue, and permission is subject to a more detailed proposal in autumn.

Excel London, which will play host to a number of events at the Olympic and Paralympic games in 2010, hopes to open the four-star plus hotel by the end of 2011.

Jones Lang LaSalle planning director Jeff Field said: "It is a major attempt on the part of Excel London to increase vitality at the eastern end of its estate, with construction underway on its new conference centre."

The hotel has been designed by Jestico + Whiles and will be located by the entrance to Excel's new conference centre.

Excel London joined the Hotel Booking Agents Association (HBAA) last month.
