Australia's UK conference and convention arrivals fell by 27% for the year ended 30 April 2009 compared to the previous year.

UK conference and convention visitors fell to 6,149, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS).

Australia reported 172,700 annual convention or conference arrivals for the same period, ABS claims, a 7% year-on-year fall.

Overall business arrivals decreased by 7% year-on-year to 786,900.

Tourism Australia was unavailable to comment on the fall in UK C&I visitors.

However, Tourism Australia's head of Business Events Australia Joyce DiMascio said the organisation's recently launched 2009/2010 C&I marketing programme has been designed to address the current market conditions.

The programme promotes the country as an aspirational destination offering value for money and will feature two separate campaigns targeting the corporate C&I and association markets.

It will include a print advertising campaign, PR campaign, improved Business Events Australia website and a year-round buyer and agent fam programme.

UK event planners visited Cairns and Melbourne in April as part of Tourism Australia's business events seven-day fam trip, which had a strong CSR focus.

Tourism Australia managing director Geoff Buckley said: "The United Kingdom continues to be an important market for Australia's business events sector. However, to ensure that we continue to attract new business from this market it is vital for key decision-makers experience Australia's business events products."
