Sydney's events business grows 100%

Australian destination has won 41 events in current financial year

Sydney’s C&I business has grown by 100% over the past year, according to promotional body Business Events Sydney (BESydney).

The organisation said it has won 41 events in the current financial year, attracting more than 200,000 delegate days to the Australian city.

The events are worth more than £86m, representing 100 per cent growth on the economic impact of business events compared to the same time last year.

BESydney chief executive Jon Hutchison said:  Our collaboration with government and industry has seen BESydney build a solid pipeline of new business for 2010 and beyond, despite the economic downturn.

Some 33 events attracting 59,200 delegates are already confirmed to be held in Sydney in 2010, amounting to 299,550 delegate days worth an estimated £111m.

The business events market is relatively resilient to short-term economic upheavals because large international conferences are planned years in advance, added Hutchison.

Recent event wins include the World Congress on Lung Cancer in 2013, which is set to attract more than 8,000 delegates and £9m for the economy.
