Portland Spa: calls in administrator but remains open for events

Portland Spa has called in administrator KPMG but the south Dorset venue remains open for events.

The Portland Spa Hotel & Conference Centre marketing manager Debbie McIvor Main said: "We are still open and continuing to trade, so bookings for events and conferences will still go ahead."

The property comprises a four-star hotel, which opened in October last year, and a conference centre, which launched in April 2007.

KPMG joint administrator and partner Richard Hill said the financial investment in converting part of the site into a hotel combined with a downturn in spending in the leisure sector had resulted in "serious financial problems" for the property.

"Our initial strategy is to stabilise the business and start to generate profits, which will increase the value and attractiveness of the hotel, the associated leisure facilities and the rest of the business park," said Hill. "The hotel has great potential and we have identified a number of opportunities to improve performance."
