Visit London is calling on event planners to use the London marathon as an opportunity to boost C&I bookings ahead of the 2012 Olympic Games.

Following the news that Virgin has taken over as the marathon's headline sponsor for 2010, the weekend around the race should showcase the capital's hospitality potential, said Visit London's commercial director David Hornby.

"The London Marathon is one the capital's most important dates in the annual events calendar," he said in his latest C&IT blog. "Let's grow the weekend around the race and show the world, not only London's ability to stage fantastic sporting occasions but also the kind of welcome the world can expect when it comes to London in 2012."
