The Police Federation has secured Home Secretary Jacqui Smith as a speaker at its annual conference at the Bournemouth International Centre (BIC) next week.

More than 2,000 delegates are anticipated to attend the conference, which marks the federation's 90th anniversary.

Police Federation chairman Paul McKeever said the BIC was well suited to the federation's requirements for the conference.

"Our annual event includes three simultaneous conferences simultaneously and there aren't many venues that can cater for such large delegate numbers in each hall, as well as a large exhibition," said McKeever.

The federation has confirmed that it intends holding its annual conference at the BIC each year until 2013.

BIC managing director Peter Gunn said: "This year alone, the conference will generate an estimated £3.6m for the local economy and the future bookings show a strong commitment to the town, which is vital in these uncertain economic times."
