Eurostar says it has cut its carbon dioxide emissions by almost a third, and has pledged to up its targets on reduction for 2012.

The company's Tread Lightly Report, released today, attributed the 31% reduction in its emissions per journey compared to 2007 to more passengers travelling per service and a change in electricity supplier in the Channel Tunnel.

Eurostar had initially targeted a 25% emissions reduction and has boosted its target to 35% by 2012.

However, Eurostar chief executive Richard Brown said that the company was projecting a "modest reversal this year as a result of the economic downturn".

"Although we expect the economic downturn to cause our passenger load factors to reduce, thus generating an increase in emissions per passenger journey in 2009, we have now raised our target to an ambitious goal of 35% by 2012, which will require a series of further efficiency measures on our trains," he said.
