England in strong position to win bid to host 2018 football World Cup

England 2018 reveals bid content at Confex

England is in a strong position to win its bid to host the 2018 football World Cup, the Events 2012 And Beyond conference at International Confex was told.

England 2018 commercial and marketing director David Magliano unveiled elements of its bid during the conference, held alongside the Confex show at Earls Court.

Magliano said England has a "strong case" to put to FIFA because of its numerous and modern stadia, the country's rich heritage, passion for football and excellent transport links.

However, he said that England faced tough competition from several rival destinations including Australia, Korea, Japan and the US.

"Later this year, England 2018 will be inviting businesses and individuals to express support for the campaign," said Magliano.

He added that if the campaign is successful, eight to 12 cities would host games, attracting some 18.4 million spectators.
