The Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC) announced 51% growth in the number of conventions.

The venue, which opened in 2005, hosted 45 conventions in 2008, compared to 22 in 2007. More than 80% of the conventions held last year were international.

KLCC general manager Peter Brokenshire said: "We are delighted with the stellar performance of the convention segment. This can be attributed to strategic marketing and promotional activities that began in 2003 before the centre opened."

Of last year's events, the 16th World Congress of Information Technology attracted 3,313 delegates from 92 countries, he added.

In total, the centre hosted 543 events in 2008, including 153 banquets and functions, 45 conventions, 63 exhibitions, 255 meetings and events and 27 entertainment productions.

Looking ahead, Brokenshire said the centre has secured 360 bookings for 2009.
