Schoolchildren surmount BS8901 challenges

UK schoolchildren have been showing the events industry how its done by creating sustainable events for the BSI British Standards' BS8901 challenge.

Seven schools received recognition today for their participation in the ‘GetGreenGo’ scheme, which asked schools to use the BS8091 as inspiration for their activities.

The standard has come under criticism since its launch last year for being difficult to implement.

The winner in the primary school category, Pilling St John’s school in Lancashire, created an eco-friendly camp for learning about sustainability. The children sourced local food or grew their own and made toys from recycled materials.

First prize in the secondary school category went to Norham Community Technology College in North Shields. It held an environment week, elected climate change champions to monitor energy wastage and set up a fair trade tuck shop.

The two category winners received £1,500 to spend on a sustainability project. Prizes were awarded at a ceremony at Manchester United’s Old Trafford ground.
