Newcastle Civic Centre: hosting climate change conference

Newcastle Civic Centre has won the right to host leading climate change event the International Biochar Initiative Conference, from 8-10 September.

Over 200 international experts from around 40 countries will gather to discuss how agricultural waste can be used to reduce the world's dependence on fossil fuels at this second international gathering, themed ‘Biochar, Sustainability and Security in a Changing Climate'.

Newcastle University's Institute for Research on Environment and Sustainability is organising the summit and was instrumental in bringing the conference to the NewcastleGateshead region.

Director David Manning said: "It is most appropriate that this conference comes to NewcastleGateshead given our region's strength in working with carbon-based energy. The conference recognises the importance of the region's forward-looking research and investment in bioenergy and carbon capture. It demonstrates our ability to act as a hub for global activities of fundamental importance to society's needs."
