Brisbane Convention & Exhibition Centre (BCEC) is introducing additional measures to reduce its environmental impact.

The Australian venue, already known as an environmental champion with recognition from international sustainability certifier Green Globe, now aims to reduce its annual carbon emissions by 103 tonnes by using ‘green power' in its administration offices.

Its escalators are being switched over to ‘sensor mode', which is anticipated to reduce their energy use by a third.

The venue is also purchasing a ‘Bio Bin', which will allow it to compost organic waste produced on site.

BCEC general manager Robert O'Keeffe said: "Sustainability is at the core of the way we conduct our operations and we are committed to raising the benchmark for the future sustainable development of our business and for our community. Our goal is to continually review and improve our environmental and social performance and add to our economic value."
