BACD voice 'will not be lost' following merger

The British Association of Conference Destinations (BACD) has insisted its members voice will not be lost when the trade body is wound into Eventia next year. The merger is set to take place on January 1 2009, following a vote by BACD members earlier today at its AGM at Aston Business School, Birmingham. While the decision received unanimous backing from the 46 members that voted (from a total of 58), there is no guaranteed place for destination representatives on the board of the enlarged Eventia. Despite this, BACD chairman Hamish Reid said he envisaged his members working together to ensure representation: “We are bringing more than 40 members [to Eventia] and if those members galvanise their support when voting for a new board, there is no reason there can’t be two or three destination partners on it.” Reid added that he was currently unsure as to whether he would stand at the next Eventia election next summer, but was pleased the merger had been backed by members: “We have worked on this for the best part of a year – it’s a logical step and we’re very happy that the members see it that way too.”
