Budgets declining, delegate study finds

A third of clients are cutting their budgets, according to a poll taken at Summer Eventia. The survey of some 200 agency, supplier and corporate delegates attending the conference during the opening session of the conference found that 31% were working with clients whose budgets were decreasing. About 42% of delegates had clients with flat budgets and just 15% had clients with increased spending power. Of the agency-side delegates, the majority - 52% - had clients with flat budgets, 26% were in decline and 16% were increasing. Of the corporate delegates, 71% were working with clients whose budgets were being cut, 14% were flat and 14% were growing. Avantgarde managing director Neil Jones, who is hosting the conference sessions, urged agencies to chase business. Agencies could be more proactive at winning contracts when they were dealing with clients, he said. "We are sitting there, waiting for what our clients are willing to give us," said Jones. "There aren't many conversations we are having with corporate marketing directors to tell them what they could be doing. We could be selling ourselves a lot better."
