Chester wins Unison conferences

Chester city workers are being trained to help disabled visitors following the destination’s Unison conference wins. Unison, Britain’s largest trade union, will hold its annual Disabled Members’ Conference at the Crowne Plaza, Chester this October and again in 2010. The conferences are projected to be worth £400,000 to the economy. CVB Visit Chester & Cheshire claims its moves to boost the quality of facilities and support available to disabled visitors contributed to its selection by Unison. The organisation is working with Chester City Council to offer courses this summer on providing support to disabled visitors to city workers including retailers, taxi drivers and the hospitality sector. It is also producing a visitor guide, which indicates locations accessible by wheelchair in the city. Cheshire City Council executive member for culture and community councillor Eric Plenderleath said providing improved access to facilities and services was top priority. “We aim to exceed the expectations of visitors with disabilities and provide the information, support and infrastructure needed to help them make the most of their time in Chester,” he said.
