Government department names agencies

The Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) has selected Edelman and Acclaim to help plan, publicise and deliver its World Creative Business Conference (WCBC). The World Creative Business Conference (WCBC) “will provide an annual forum for people engaged in the creative industries worldwide to debate in depth the challenges and opportunities for the sector”, according to a statement form DCMS. The first conference is scheduled for 2009 and will see some 500 “business and creative luminaries, as well as unknown, up-and-coming entrepreneurs” attend, DCMS says. The agencies were appointed following a competitive pitch process managed by the Central Office of Information (COI). The two will now begin to develop the WCBC concept through consultation with the creative community. The brief also includes finding a suitable venue (or venues) for the event, securing media and commercial partnerships and inviting and attracting high-profile speakers and guests. Culture Secretary Andy Burnham commented: "This conference represents a unique opportunity to showcase the creative and commercial edge of the UK. It will not only help build on the success of Britain’s creative economy, but fulfil our ambition to become the world’s creative hub.” The event forms one of the 26 commitments set out in the strategy paper ‘Creative Britain: New Talents for the New Economy’ published earlier this year, which was designed to put renewed public focus on culture and creativity and the creative industries. The agency contract runs until November 2009.
