Newcastle Gateshead wins physics conference

Newscastle Gateshead has won its bid to host the 28th International Colloquium on Group-Theoretical Methods in Physics. The conference will be held at Northumbria University’s City Campus East on 26-30 July 2010 and is expected to attract 250 physicists and mathematicians from throughout the world. Delegates will have the opportunity to visit Durham during the convention and the itinerary includes visits to Hadrian’s Wall and Alnwick Castle. Northumbria University mathematical physics professor Maia Angelova and Durham University department of mathematical sciences professor Wojciech Zakrzewski are organising the event. Newcastle Gateshead Convention Bureau teamed up with Northumbria University to help see off the likes of Prague to host the conference, and head of business tourism Jessica Roberts said it had been almost three decades since the conference was last held in Britain. “We are absolutely delighted that this international conference will be returning to Britain after a gap of 28 years and that Newcastle Gateshead has been chosen as the venue,” she said. “This underlines the fact that investment in new hotels, state-of-the-art university facilities and halls of residence pays off.” The conference was last held in New York in 2006.
