MCI lands green venue contract

Agency MCI’S sustainable services division has won the contract to create and implement a sustainability strategy for Portugal’s Estoril Congress Center. The division has been contracted to create strategies and implement practical measures to help the venue – which is near Lisbon and opened in 2001 – minimise its waste and carbon emissions, use food and water from sustainable sources, ensure health and safety, enhance community partnerships and implement transparent performance reporting. MCI sustainability services division manager Michael Luehrs will lead the implementation of a four-stage plan that covers strategy and vision, stakeholder engagement, operational implementation and innovation. Guy Bigwood, who is MCI’s sustainability director and a director of the Green Meeting Industry Council, said: “The venue team has already started to integrate sustainability into the operation of the facility and our job is to help them move to the next stages. We will help them rethink the day-to-day operations and integrate sustainability into the DNA of the organisation." Estoril Congress Center decided to step up its environmental efforts in response to concerns on climate change and managing director, Pedro Rocha dos Santos said he hoped neighbouring venues would follow suit. “I envisage our neighbours in surrounding hotels and venues following our lead and joining us in making Estoril the premier green meeting destination in Europe.”
