St Helens lands Tourism Society 2008 conference

The Tourism Society has announced that St Helens is to stage its annual conference next year from 19-20 June. Carrying the theme 'Emerging Markets in Tourism' the event is being held in conjunction with St Helens Council and is expected to see more than 1000 delegates from the UK and overseas attend. As well as consumer travel, the emerging markets theme will take in keynote sessions on business tourism (conferences & exhibitions). "It is a great coup that the Tourism Society has elected to hold its 2008 annual conference here,” said St Helens Tourism Business Network chairman Dickon White, also managing director of Haydock Park Racecourse. He continued: “This reflects the tremendous drive and commitment that characterises the local travel and meetings industry, and, thanks to close partnership working between the public and private sectors, has resulted in St Helens' growing profile as a destination.” Tourism Society executive director Flo Powell added that her organisation opted for the destination because of the advances it had made both in terms of business and consumer tourism: "From a position six years ago where it had no association with tourism whatsoever, St Helens is now cited by the Northwest Development Agency as an example to others in terms of its approach to tourism development. This has been achieved by maximising its existing assets, capitalising on new opportunities and emerging markets.”
