Green creds bag Liberal conference for Liverpool

The Liberal Democrats have named Liverpool’s Arena and Convention Centre (ACC) as the venue for its next spring conference, citing the new venue’s green credentials as one of the key attractions. The £146m ACC is set to open next January and will host the Liberal Democrats from 7-9 March. According to the party, the conference is on course to be the party’s biggest ever, with 1,500 delegates expected. “We chose ACC Liverpool because it is an incredibly impressive facility and also manages to be so green,” said Liberal Democrat conference coordinator Emma Harris. “It is our intention to see how the spring conference goes and, if it all goes well, we will be giving very serious consideration to bringing the bigger autumn conference to Liverpool as well.” Liberal Democrat leader Menzies Campbell added: “I am delighted the Liberal Democrats will be holding our 2008 spring conference in Liverpool, in the year the city celebrates being European Capital of Culture. The Liberal Democrats have strong ties to Liverpool, having run the City Council since 1998.” ACC Liverpool is designed to be as environmentally friendly as possible, with its own wind farm, rainwater harvesting scheme and a design which will produce half the CO2 emissions of a traditional building and use 20% less electricity, according to architects Wilkinson Eyre.
