Melbourne ECC nets £107m before completion

The Melbourne Exhibition and Convention Centre has managed to win 16 international conventions worth £107m despite still being under construction. Among the conferences booked into the £428m convention centre are the Parliament of the World’s Religions, the International Geomorphology Conference and International Federation of Societies of Cosmetic Chemists International Conference, which will take place in 2009, the venue’s opening year. Melbourne Convention and Visitors Bureau chief executive Sandra Chipchase said the 16 conventions from 2009 to 2011 would draw more than 36,000 delegates to the city and generate more than £107m. “Melbourne has a strong base for innovation with an advanced infrastructure, a highly educated workforce, world-class research institutions and seven leading universities, making our city the perfect backdrop for the meeting of so many world-renowned minds,” she said. The centre, which will be Australia’s largest combined convention and exhibition venue, will also host the Congress of the International Federation of Municipal Engineers in 2009, the World Congress of Internal Medicine in 2010, the World Congress on Human Reproduction in 2011, and the 5th International Congress of the Asia Pacific Society of Infection Control in 2011.
