Newcastle Gateshead bags ABPCO conference

Newcastle Gateshead Convention Bureau has won its bid to host the Association of British Professional Conference Organisers (ABPCO) annual conference 2008. The win comes on the back of ABPCO’s appointment of Lesley Maltman, managing director of MCI Belfast, formerly Ovation, to the position of chair. She replaces Jonathan Wilson, who remains a committee member. The conference will take place in January at several venues including Hilton Newcastle Gateshead, Matfen Hall and The Sage Gateshead. Leeds and Birmingham were also in contention to host the conference, which will attract 30-40 of the UK’s top conference organisers. “The annual conference is the most important meeting in our calendar and the destination we choose plays a fundamental part in its success,” said ABPCO executive director Tony Rogers. “We chose Newcastle Gateshead for the high quality of the facilities and for the professionalism, support and commitment of the people we met.” Newcastle Gateshead Convention Bureau head of business tourism Jessica Roberts said: “To be chosen by industry leaders in the conference field confirms that we are one of the most vibrant and exciting conference destinations in the UK with the ability to provide first class facilities and accommodate the best in the business.”
