MCI plan to match UN Global Compact

Global agency MCI has unveiled plans to make CSR and the UN Global Compact principles a fundamental part of its long-term strategy. £40,000 has already been spent on research and staff education CSR director Guy Bigwood told a seminar at Imex today. “Around 50-80% of the RFPs we now receive have requests for environmental information and in the last month alone we have received three citing the UN Global Compact.” MCI has set up a ‘CSR taskforce’ which will help clients achieve their CSR objectives, partly through measuring – and making them aware of – the environmental impact of their events. MCI worked with environmental event specialist Meeting Strategies Worldwide to create its Sustainable Event Methodology, which the agency will use in consultation with clients to help them measure, benchmark and report on environmental impacts, Bigwood said. The agency is also creating an in-house practice focused on using renewable energy in events. MCI is also currently gathering information on the way in which it impacts environmentally and socially and next year the statistics from this will be included in its triple bottom line reporting, covering its environmental, social and financial impacts. “I think that being totally carbon and climate-neutral is impossible, but we will do as much as we can to minimise and improve our footprint,” Bigwood told delegates. MCI’s Barcelona office has already introduced a green office programme, comprising initiatives designed to reduce its environmental impact, and its other 16 offices are following suit. The initiatives include making energy savings of 30-70%, using water-saving devices, and employing environmentally-responsible suppliers. Each MPI office now has an ‘environmental champion’ whose job it is to implement initiatives.
