Firms question ethics of travel industry

Half of the UK’s medium-sized companies have lost faith in the corporate travel industry, according to a report commissioned by online hotel booking company Hotel Reservation Service. The UK Companies Business Travel Report was conducted by independent market researcher Pulse Research and polled 250 companies employing at least 200 people, including 50 FTSE 500 businesses. It found that almost half of those questioned felt their travel agents fail to give them the best advice and do not believe they are completely independent. The study claims that of the companies that use a single travel management consultant, 45% believe their agent steers them toward preferred suppliers. It also found that different levels of service were received by FTSE 500 and medium-sized companies receive, with a third of medium-sized businesses receiving reliable advice on hotel suitability compared to 60% of FTSE 500 companies. Elsewhere the report states that firms are increasingly avoiding business class travel, with 75% medium-sized companies insisting on economy or standard class and 45% of FTSE 500 companies allowing only senior managers to upgrade to business class travel.
