Q Group doubles with Marston buy-up

Leeds-based Q Hotels Group has acquired the Marston Hotels chain in a £180m deal, more than doubling its portfolio. Independent chain Marston, winners of AA Hotel Group of the Year in 2002, has 12 hotels, taking Q’s total to 21 in a move to bolster its C&I offer. “Marston is a highly reputable hotel chain with properties situated in key strategic locations across the UK,” said Q Hotels managing director Michael Purthill. “The hotels are already well established in their own right and are strong leisure destinations, which is very attractive to the conference market, a sector we have targeted from the outset.” The Marston name will disappear from January, coinciding with the roll-out of a refurbishment programme across the new acquisitions. The most significant of these will be at Crewe Hall, where a new 450-capacity conference facility and leisure club will be added, along with 54 additional bedrooms. The New Year will also see Q transfer Marston’s Reflections health and leisure centre concept into its existing properties. “It’s very spa-oriented, which is something that is currently lacking acrosss the group,” Purthill added. Q Hotels Group was formed in 2003 with the purchase of three hotels – The Midland in Manchester, The Queens in Leeds and Chesford Grange in Warwick. The group is expected to make further acquisitions in the near future.
