Benchmark wins ports business

Newcastle-based agency Benchmark Communications has opened a corporate division, acquiring its first contract to organise a three-night event for the Port of Tyne next October. The contract sees Benchmark source the venue for the conference as well as organise the social programme for 120 delegates expected at the British Ports Association annual conference hosted by the Port of Tyne. In addition to the venue, Benchmark will organise a drinks reception and two dinners and have shortlisted venues including the Baltic Centre of Contemporary Art and Hilton Newcastle Gateshead. The business win was brought in by newly-appointed corporate events services manager Paul Szomuru, who has joined from Newcastle’s Millennium Copthorne where he was conference and events manager. The new division comes in response to feedback from the Newcastle Gateshead Initiative, which identified a shortage of businesses catering for corporate business in the north east of England. "The majority of companies in the north east tend to organise events in house or subcontract services to London agencies," Szomuru said. "Our mission to create a one-stop corporate entertainment arm and then sell it as an alternative option."
