Spanish resort adds convention centre

Spanish theme park resort Portaventura has announced plans to build a convention and exhibition centre, three golf courses and add a new hotel. Set to open its doors in 2009, the 12,000sqm, 4,000-capacity venue is being built in response to growing C&I demand at the resort. Based an hour south of Barcelona, Portaventura has hosted events for the Spanish offices of clients such as Coca-Cola, Kellogg’s, American Express and Unilever in 2006. “We have done extremely well with domestic corporate clients and we now want to substantially grow our UK business in the coming years,” said Portaventura business development manager Paul Black. UK visitors currently make up 20% of Portaventura’s consumer base. The convention centre will sit alongside Portaventura’s two theme parks and three existing hotels. A fourth four-star property will be added in 2009 to create capacity for visiting delegates, preceded by the addition of two 18-hole and one 9-hole golf course in 2008.
