Silverjet set for winter launch

Silverjet has acquired two airline businesses with a view to launching its own business-class service from London to New York later this year. The deal, announced today, will see Silverjet take ownership of Gatwick-based charter airline Flyjet and Luton-based aircraft leasing company Skylease. The acquisition, valued at up to £5.5m, gives the airline access to Skylease’s two Boeing 757s and Flyjet’s air operator certificate, a licence that means it can fly without outsourcing the operation of its aircraft. Silverjet intends to fly from London Luton to Newark “within the next three to four months,” according to chief executive officer Lawrence Hunt. It will offer 30-minute check in from a private jet terminal, an average return fare of £999 and flat beds. Billing itself as the “first British airline to offer a low-fare, all-business class service,” the carrier is set to compete against US-based Eos and Maxjet, which also offer Atlantic services targeted solely at business travellers.
