Latvia tourism wins presidential backing

Latvia is pushing its MICE appeal by combining the state visits of the country’s President with a workshop with convention bureau Inspiration Riga. At a forum at London’s Royal Garden Hotel in July, President Vaira Vike-Freiberga paid tribute to the trade ties between the UK and Latvia. The speech was followed by a workshop promoting Latvia’s MICE credentials. It included exhibitors from a range of Latvian hotels, DMCs and airlines including Air Baltic, Jurmala Spa & Conference Centre, DMC Baltic Travel Group and the Riga Congress Centre. The President described the UK market as an “attractive place for doing business” and stated that more than 130,000 passengers had travelled between London and Riga in the first five months of this year. She also outlined how the Queen’s visit to Latvia – the first by a British monarch – and the Nato summit later this year will further demonstrate Latvia’s credentials. Inspiration Riga communication and markets director Richard Baerug said: “The president has started this tradition of us accompanying her on her state visits to key tourism markets.”
