New safety kitemark for UK hotels

Travel management consultancy Portman Travel has launched a kitemark to encourage greater safety and crime prevention measures at UK hotels. The company will awared a seal of approval to hotels that meet criteria that include the provision of CCTV, safes, secure check-in methods and room allocation. London’s Grange City hotel in Tower Hill is the first to be awarded the seal. The move comes after research revealed that most businesses fail to equip employees travel safety guidelines, despite increased awareness of risk litigation. In the survey of 500 business travellers, 95% had not been briefed with any travel guidelines from their employer, while 35% remained fearful of attack and a quarter of robbery. Portman Travel marketing director, Bob Govan said: "Many people travel on business alone and in our survey, lone female travellers felt particularly vulnerable. "Security in hotels is only one aspect of travel safety but we felt it was a smart way for us to make a contribution to travellers’ peace of mind."
