More venues impose smoke-free policies

Cigarette breaks between conference sessions could soon become a thing of the past after another UK meetings venue made its premises smoke-free. Following demand from its clients, the Scarman Training and Conference Centre, part of Warwick University, is the latest to enforce a ban in its meeting rooms and lounges, joining two other members of the Warwick Conferences portfolio. “We did a poll of delegates and found that 90% supported a total ban on smoking in public areas,” said marketing and communications manager Amanda Simpson. “Over the past year, it’s become more of an issue and in properties where we’ve had the ban longer we’ve had positive feedback from clients across all sectors, genders and age groups.” The ban is comprehensive in Scotland, where from March smoking will be outlawed across the country in all public areas. Edinburgh International Conference Centre business excellence director Geoff Fenlon said that the ban would not make a difference. “Around 80% of clients ask for no smoking anyway, and smokers have been positive about it. They understand it’s for the health of the staff and other delegates,” he said.
