New York pours £1bn into Javits expansion

New York is investing an estimated £1bn into the expansion of the Javits Convention Center. In response to customer demand for more space and extra facilities, the expansion will add a 6,000-seat ballroom, a 1,500-room hotel and an extra 31,000m2 of meeting space spread across three floors. On completion, which is planned for the first quarter of 2010, the project is forecast by Pricewaterhousecoopers to bring an additional £395m per year in economic benefit to the city. Tim McGuinness, vice-president sales at NYC & Company, the city’s convention bureau, will conduct a MICE sales mission to the UK in spring. "The Javits expansion will raise NYC’s profile as a conference destination for large groups, while the introduction of all business-class carriers Eos and MAXjet Airways will help the city host high-end incentives for the Concorde set," he said. Eos, launched in October 2005, will commence a second daily flight between New York and Stansted this month, while MAXJet will increase its service to a daily offering mid-February.
