Kempinski targets Eastern Europe

Kempinski Hotels and Resorts is targeting Eastern Europe for expansion as part of its five-year plan to grow from 48 to 100 properties worldwide. The chain currently has properties under development in Lithuania (Vilnius), two in Latvia (Riga), two in Slovakia (Bratislava and the Tatras Mountains) and Istria in Croatia. Mike Haemmerli, vice-president for development said the move was down to competitive pricing, increasing awareness of the area in the UK market and better air access. "It is also coming to be seen more as a business destination as the countries join or look to join the EU," he added. "And because Kempinski is a major brand in Russia, we are starting to see demand for properties in the nearby Baltic states." The chain is also targeting China and the Middle East and Africa, added Haemmerli.
