T-Mobile procures event staff

The gap between event specialists and procurement could narrow if corporates employ event staff in purchasing departments. Speaking at a joint seminar between the ITMA and the Chartered Institute of Purchasing and Supply (CIPS), T-Mobile (UK) procurement manager Chris Birdsall said: "In most companies, event teams are based in marketing, sales or HR. We have brought event specialists into the procurement department. This means there is greater understanding of the final objectives and purchasing decisions can be made accordingly." He said it was easier to teach event specialists about procurement than vice-versa. "The end user comes to us and we help them source and plan an event using our approved supplier base," he said. "We hold their hand throughout according to their capabilities, but they execute the event themselves. We get involved again for evaluation. He said drawing on experience from the events team has raised the credibility of the T-Mobile procurement division.
