North Wales to invest in conference centre

North Wales is making a major financial push to firmly establish itself as a C&I destination. Long overshadowed by the area in and around Cardiff to the south, the region is ploughing £10.7m into its North Wales Conference Centre to complement the area’s natural attractions. The expansion project will take place over the next 18 months, resulting in an enlarged auditorium for up to 1,500 delegates, 3,500m2 of exhibition space and 20 break-out rooms. Until now the centre, which is set beneath the foothills of Snowdonia in Llandudno and offers spectacular views out to sea, has relied heavily on its location to attract business. When the project is completed, the centre hopes to draw in larger conferences and events. "This investment will turn the centre into an iconic building," said Wales Tourist Board head of business tourism Pat Crimp. "It’s an exciting development. At present the hotel stock doesn’t measure up to Cardiff’s in terms of quality and recognised brands, but our hope is that the investment will trigger more high-end properties in the area." Funding for the expansion is to come from the European Funding Office and local authority Conway Borough Council.
