Figures are positive for hotel occupancy

UK hotel occupancy rose by 2.1% in January 2004, compared with the same period last year, and room rates increased slightly. The figures come from the latest HotStats UK Chain Hotels Market Review, compiled by TRI Hospitality Consulting, drawing on a sample of 550 hotels. Occupancy was highest in London, rising to 70.6% from 67.8%. The positive forecast is supported by Marriott UK’s product manager for corporate and conference business Mark Kemp, who reports improvements over the last three months. "We are noting an optimistic outlook, indicated by the return of enquiries about large, residential events," he said. But suppliers should stay cautious, according to sales and marketing director of the Montpelier Collection Dev Anand. "The first quarter has been more robust, but it is easy to read anything into statistics. World events could impact on the industry," he said.
