BTP lobbies for CVB at Parliament event

The need to establish a national convention bureau for England was one of the main issues brought up at the first-ever meeting between the British Tourism Partnership (BTP) and the All Parliamentary Group on Tourism, which took place last month. Other concerns raised included the need for additional resources for business tourism, delays in revising the inward mission scheme, designed to bring overseas C&I buyers into the country, and the importance of efficient and accessible transport links to business event destinations and venues. BTP chairman Michael Hirst said he hoped the meeting would become a regular fixture. “Now that the sector represents the major market share of Britain’s incoming tourism and is also the strongest growth sector in England, MPs are taking a keener interest in policies that can support a more profitable future,” he added. Research from VisitBritain shows that expenditure by business visitors now outstrips that of leisure tourists, accounting for just under 32% of the total spend (CIT, May 2003). The total value of the UK inbound business tourism sector is estimated to be more than £16bn.
