Thailand grows visitor remit with CVB launch

Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) has launched a dedicated convention and exhibition bureau, two years after the idea was first mooted. The bureau will be represented in the UK by the convention team at TAT’s London office. TAT London manager for MICE Maggie Greenstock said: “We are still waiting to see how much budget will be available and which direction the marketing will take as that is still under discussion at head office.” Until these decisions are made the bureau will continue with the current marketing activities as carried out by TAT’s convention department. A Thailand-based director has yet to be appointed, but Greenstock said it was unlikely more staff will be taken on in London. The bureau’s remit will be to oversee marketing and promotional campaigns in major markets and co-ordinate Thailand’s participation in trade shows. It will also advise buyers. UK buyers have welcomed the news, stating they were confident it would further assist in promoting the destination to clients. “TAT has always been fantastic with helping out with information and assisting with programmes, and a bureau is likely to help all the more,” said Flexi Conference & Incentives operations director Pauline Gullidge, who currently has three proposals out to clients for Thailand. Lynn Backhouse, senior operations manager at QTS, agreed. “TAT has always been good at communicating new products; a bureau can only help further,” she said. Thailand is 13th on ICCA’s preferred international destinations list by the number of meeting planners in 2001
