New EICC hall adds large event appeal

The Edinburgh International Conference Centre (EICC) is to add a £25m extension, earmarked for completion in 2006, in a bid to attract larger-scale conferences to the city. The increased capacity is expected to more than double the economic benefit brought to the region each year by the centre to £39.5m by 2010. While the design has yet to be finalised, the outline plans include a 1,600m2 multi-function hall – more than twice the size of the existing Cromdale and Strathblane halls. Breakout rooms will be added, as will removable raked seating, technical booths and a café. “This extension is the last part of the jigsaw in the Exchange business area, of which the EICC is the catalyst,” EICC senior sales team leader Lesley Stephens said. “The key to the development is its flexibility; the hall will be able to host exhibitions and conferences to banquets and product launches. “This development will benefit Edinburgh as a conference destination. In the past we have turned away clients whose events have been too large,” Stephens added. “Now we will be able to secure some of the larger events.” The latest ICCA statistics make Edinburgh the 15th most popular city in the world for hosting international association meetings, with 30 in 2001.
