Highlands launches event support plan

The Highlands of Scotland Convention Bureau has launched a conference Ambassadors programme to boost business tourism. The bureau is looking to recruit members of local associations, professional bodies and societies to encourage more meetings to the region. Business tourism contributes £5.2m to the local economy annually and is an important factor in improving seasonality in tourism. Convention bureau manager Moira Unwin said: “A bid to host a conference is more likely to be successful if the invitation has been made by someone from the local area. The bureau can help Ambassadors organise their event by offering free practical support from the initial stages of a bid, up to the staging of the event.” The Ambassador initiative has already seen some success in other parts of Scotland, including Glasgow, where between April 2001 and January this year the ambassadors helped generate £25m worth of business for the city.
